Might it be Mites?

Do your eyes feel itchy in the morning? Do the look red or slightly crusty along the lashes?? The eyelids are a very common place to find Demodex mites… yes I said mites!  Demodex mites are 0.3-0.4 mm long mites that live in the pores of our facial skin. They are particularly fond of the hair follicles of eyebrows and eyelashes, and the oily pores most common on the nose, forehead, and cheeks, and can cause redness and irritation.

Healthy adults have 1-2 mites per square centimetre of skin and those with skin conditions such as Acne or Rosacea typically have 10 times more. Mascara can also lead to a higher prevalence of the mites…. as can sleeping in your make up!

So take your make up off each night and if you are having irritation on your lids see an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist specialising in Dry Eye Disease.
