Ocular Probiotics?

The ocular microbiome is the the group of bacteria and other microbes that live on the ocular surface. Just like in the digestive tract, having a good balance of the right type of bacteria appears to be good for the eye.

When things are out of balance dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction can occur. We also know that patients with Rosacea often have MGD, and there is evidence a healthy gut microbiome, including the consumption of a fiber and prebiotic rich diet benefits rosacea. Currently, Hypocholorous Acid treatments can play a role in managing bad bacteria but we will most likely see other modes of therapy, including diet advice, that help the good material and minimise the bad bacteria, become mainstream methods of improving dry eye disease.
