Another Systemic Puzzle Piece

Dry eye disease is a complex condition. Multiple lifestyle, environmental and general health factors can impact the signs and symptoms of the disease.

We do know women are more often affected by the disease and that hormones play a role. A recent study has now found that women in their 20’s and 30’s with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have higher Schirmer I test scores, lower tear break up times and significantly higher OSDI symptom scores compared to normals.

The authors also propose that the severity of dry eye may be correlated with the level of inflammation and hyperandrogenism in patients with PCOS.
